Subsequent Title Comment
This etching went through eight states before being editioned for the first time, in 2008, as Road. Its reworking in two further states in the following year saw the addition of dark clouds, rain and a bare tree – alterations that clearly gave the image a seasonal character. In its ninth state, the work was retitled Winter, and after being taken through a tenth state it was printed in a second edition. In 2018 Amor revisited this plate, and this state was retitled The Road, turning the image towards to its initial title (Road, 2008). Four states were made as Road, and the fourth and final state was printed in a third edition. Soon after Amor completed the edition for The Road, the artist returned to the plate and the resulting states were retitled The Road II. Amor significantly burnished the plate, reducing the appearance of shadows across the image. After the 18th state, before the edition impression, Amor made a large adjustment, burnishing the supportive buttress on the second, central pier. While it had previously been a long, curving form, it was transformed into a simple, neat triangular shape. Throughout four additional states of The Road II, and especially in this final amendment, Amor burnished and redrew his plate in order to sharpen and simplify the geometry of the concrete roadway and its supports.
