The etching was begun in 1997 as a larger horizontal composition titled Exit ramp. Amor took it through seven states and editioned it with that title in 1997. However, he was never entirely satisfied with the etching, because he thought the composition did not do justice to the grandeur of the bridge. He therefore went back to the plate in 2001 and, in the eighth and final state, he cut it down on all sides, thus having the focus on the bridge itself rather than on the approach to it. For a full account of this work (including a comprehensive Comment, and information on all states), please click on the hyperlink above, under ‘Initial Title’.
