  • I. 1st state of 2, 1990

    Soft-ground etching and etching. A depiction of the head and shoulders of the artist, who has a beard and moustache. He looks intently, his eyes slightly raised.

    Impression on wove paper, printed by Rick Amor in his Dunmoochin studio. Inscribed in pencil, below the plate mark: lower left: ‘1 [circled]’; lower centre: ‘SP.’; lower right: signed and dated ‘Rick Amor 90’.

  • II. 2nd and final state, 1990

    Much of the plate now shows additional sketchy etching and soft-ground etching. There are two variant impressions of this state.

    1. Impression on wove paper, printed by Rick Amor in his Dunmoochin studio. Inscribed in pencil, below the plate mark: lower left: ‘A/P’; lower centre: ‘SP’; lower right: signed and dated ‘Rick Amor ’90’. (Featured Image)
    2. Very dark impression, with a dark grey film of plate tone, on wove paper, printed by Rick Amor in his Dunmoochin studio. Inscribed in pencil, below the plate mark: lower left: ‘A/P’; lower centre: ‘SP’; lower right: signed and dated ‘Rick Amor ’90’.

  • Edition, 1991

    Nominal edition of ten, but only four impressions were printed and numbered. These are on wove paper and were printed by Rick Amor in his Dunmoochin studio. Each impression is inscribed in pencil, below the plate mark: lower left: ‘[1 through 4]/10’; lower centre: ‘SP’; lower right: signed and dated ‘Rick Amor ’91’.

    Edition sheet size: 382 x 284 mm

  • Comment

    This is one of three etched self portraits begun in quick succession in early 1990. The other two are cat. nos E.016 and E.017.

    On the verso of the copper plate used for E.018 is an etching depicting a dog on a pier surrounded by rough seas; this image was never printed and has been cancelled.
