E.170 Nude 2012

  • I. 1st state of 4

Etching and drypoint. A standing female nude, rendered from the shoulders to the knees. The woman steps towards the right but her torso faces forward; her proper left arm is bent at the elbow, and her other arm is raised and out of sight. Freely drawn horizontal lines appear just below the knee, about a centimetre from the plate mark. Accents of drypoint outline the darkest contours of the body and the pubic hair. Foul biting is evident throughout the background.

Impression on cream wove paper, printed by Rick Amor in his Alphington studio. Inscribed in pencil, below the plate mark: lower left: ‘1-1’; lower centre: ‘Nude’; lower right: signed and dated ‘R Amor ’12’.

  • II. 2nd state of 4

The contour of the left hip and thigh has been re-etched. There are two variant impressions of this state.

    1. Impression with dark plate tone, on cream wove paper, printed by Rick Amor in his Alphington studio. Inscribed in pencil, below the plate mark: lower left: ‘1-2’; lower centre: ‘Nude’; lower right: signed and dated ‘R Amor ’12’.
    2. Cleanly wiped impression on cream wove paper, printed by Rick Amor in his Alphington studio. Inscribed in pencil, below the plate mark: lower left: ‘2-2’; lower centre: ‘Nude’; lower right: signed and dated ‘R Amor ’12’.
  • III. 3rd state of 4

Drypoint has been added to the pudendum. There are three variant impressions of this state.

    1. Impression with light plate tone, on cream wove paper, printed by Rick Amor in his Alphington studio. Inscribed in pencil, below the plate mark: lower left: ‘1-3’; lower centre: ‘Nude’; lower right: signed and dated ‘R Amor ’12’.
    2. Impression with prominent plate tone, darker along the left edge, on cream wove paper, printed by Rick Amor in his Alphington studio. Inscribed in pencil, below the plate mark: lower left: ‘2-3’; lower centre: ‘Nude’; lower right: signed and dated ‘R Amor ’12’.
    3. Very dark impression with much plate tone and prominent wiping marks, on cream wove paper, printed by Rick Amor in his Alphington studio. Inscribed in pencil, below the plate mark: lower left: ‘3-3’; lower centre: ‘Nude’; lower right: signed and dated ‘R Amor ’12’.
  • IV. 4th and final state

A prominent drypointed rectangle has been ruled around the image, about one centimetre from the plate mark. The background is covered with light cross-hatching, over which dark, vertical striations have been made with the drypoint needle. The body has received additional drypoint modelling. There are two variant impressions of this state.

    1. Dark impression with plate tone, selectively wiped around the newly created margin and on the body, on cream wove paper, printed by Rick Amor in his Alphington studio. Inscribed in pencil, below the plate mark: lower left: ‘1-4’; lower centre: ‘Nude’; lower right: signed and dated ‘R Amor ’12’. (Featured Image)
    2. Very dark impression with plate tone and rich burr, selectively wiped around the newly created margin and on the body, on cream wove paper, printed by Rick Amor in his Alphington studio. Inscribed in pencil, below the plate mark: lower left: ‘2-4’; lower centre: ‘Nude’; lower right: signed and dated ‘R Amor ’12’.

  • Comment

This etching is based on a life drawing and is oriented in the same direction. The first state of the print shows the figure against a light background, as in the drawing, but Amor experimented with a dark background in printing an impression of the third state, and then implemented the change to darkness in the following, final state. At this stage he decided he was unhappy with the way the plate had progressed and he did not print an edition.
